What Does the Bible Say About Feeling Overwhelmed?

I've had those days when it seems like life is pressing in from multiple directions at once. and this week I can think of at least two when that was the case. As women walking by faith, it's natural at times to feel weighed down and overwhelmed, like we're carrying an invisible but heavy burden. We help with handling responsibilities at home, carry concerns about spouses and family, face financial strain, handle challenges at work, make tough decisions, and sometimes we're dealing with personal matters that have been burdensome for some time.
In our hearts, prayer connects us to our faith in Jesus, and we do what we know is right to keep moving forward, but there can still come a time when everything feels like too much to bear.
I’ve learned to turn to the Word and look for people in Scripture who went through trouble, uncertainty, fear, exhaustion, grief, and situations they couldn’t fix on their own. Their stories are what we need to read and draw from, because they remind us that we need God’s help when life’s pressures become more than we can handle alone.
When you need hope, here are some of my favorite uplifting truths from God's Word to hold onto.
Tell God When Your Heart Is Overwhelmed
“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
Psalm 61:2
David knew what it meant to feel overwhelmed, and his response was to cry out to God. He called upon the Lord because he knew he needed help beyond himself.
We can do the same. Tell God what is weighing on you, what you are afraid of, what you cannot fix, and where you need His help. When your own strength feels lacking, you can ask the Lord to lead you somewhere stronger than yourself. He will provide spiritual wisdom and guidance to uplift your spirit.
Bring the Problem You're Carrying to Jesus
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28–30
Jesus spoke to people weighed down by their troubles, encouraging them to come to Him. Some burdens become heavier because we try to carry them alongside every responsibility, obligation, and worry. And there are situations that really do demand endurance, patience, wisdom, and strength. These are qualities we can’t always muster on our own.
We turn to the Word because it teaches us to stay close to Jesus and learn from Him. Life can get overwhelming, but that’s when we need to lean on the Lord’s presence, His Word, and His strength, and find rest in knowing that our lives remain in His hands.
"Some burdens become heavier because we try to carry them alongside every responsibility, obligation, and worry."
Pray About What Is Filling Your Mind
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7
When we feel overwhelmed, that feeling often affects the mind as much as anything else. One concern leads to another, and before long you're carrying the situation you're actually facing along with several things that haven't even happened.
So, direct your mind toward prayer. And bring your requests before God specifically. If you're concerned about your family, pray about your family. If money is troubling you, talk to God about the need. If you have a decision to make, ask Him for wisdom.
If you are struggling to see how something is going to work out, you can tell the Lord that too.
God's peace is more than able to guard our hearts and minds even while we're waiting for circumstances to change.
Don't Forget Where Your Help Comes From
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1
The presence and power of God are real, even when some seasons of life really are difficult. When you’re carrying responsibilities, you can’t set aside or facing problems that take time to resolve, remember He’s right there in the middle of it all. You can lean on Him for strength in the moment and return to Him every day for more.
"God's peace is more than able to guard our hearts and minds even while we're waiting for circumstances to change."
If Life Feels Like Too Much Right Now
Begin with what's actually in front of you. Take your concerns to God in prayer and spend some time reading His Word before allowing your mind to run through every possible outcome.
Ask the Lord to give you wisdom about what needs your attention and strength for the responsibilities you have to take care of.
We can’t always fix everything in a single day, and some situations just take time. But there’s strength in consistently praying and trusting God. It’s growing your faith and helping you better understand what He’s doing in your life. The Lord stays your refuge and support as you work through the burdens you’re carrying.
