5 Bible Verses to Read When You Don’t Know What to Do

One of the hardest parts about making decisions in life is learning how to wait for direction without allowing fear, pressure, or impatience to make the decision for you. There's been times when I prayed about a situation, weighed my options, got advice from trusted people, and still felt uncertain about what to do.
Sometimes we want God to make the answer obvious, especially when the decision affects our family, finances, work, relationships, or something else that means a lot to us. You may want an immediate answer from God, but He doesn't always give you one on your timetable. This is where staying close to His Word matters because the Bible gives us wisdom for how to walk with God while we are still trying to determine what to do.
When making a decision or seeking God’s guidance, take time to read these five passages to help you choose a path that aligns with His plan for your life.
1. James 1:5
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
James was writing to believers who were going through trials, and he told them what to do when they lacked the wisdom needed to walk through what they were facing: ask God.
This has always been a good place for me to begin when I don't know what to do. Bring your situation before God plainly and ask Him for wisdom. We can spend so much time trying to work through every possible outcome in our minds that prayer becomes something we do after we've exhausted ourselves. But James says that we can go directly to God for the wisdom we need.
2. Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Our understanding has limits. We make decisions based on what we know today, while God knows what we can't see ahead of us.
God's Word says to trust and acknowledge Him in all our ways. So, our decisions should include God rather than being made apart from Him.
Pray about what you're considering. Search His Word for anything that speaks to the situation. Be willing to let go of an option if it requires you to compromise what God has already made clear in His Word.
Trusting God means being willing to accept that we won’t always have all the answers before moving forward.
3. Psalm 32:8
“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
It’s so reassuring to know I don’t have to navigate every part of life on my own. There’s comfort in knowing that God teaches, instructs, and guides His people.
His guidance will always agree with His Word, which is one reason your Bible time becomes especially important when you're seeking direction.
As you pray, continue reading your Bible and allow what God has already spoken to shape your thinking.
Sometimes the direction we need becomes clearer as our desires, choices, and thinking come under the authority of God's Word.
4. Philippians 4:6–7
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Not knowing what to do can quickly become worry. You begin thinking about what could go wrong, whether you'll make the wrong decision, and what will happen if things do not turn out the way you hoped.
Paul encouraged believers to bring those concerns to God in prayer. Not every prayer will immediately produce the answer we're looking for but be assured that God's peace will guard your heart and mind while you're bringing your requests to Him.
You may still have a decision to make, but you do not have to let anxiety control the process.
5. Psalm 119:105
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Sometimes we wish God would reveal the whole plan, yet He gives us just enough light to walk faithfully where we are in life. Have you ever wondered what you’d do if you knew the full story—the bigger picture, the complete plan? You might miss the beauty of the journey with the Lord, where He builds your faith, walks beside you, teaches you, and helps you grow.
A lamp helps us see where we're stepping. God's Word gives us truth for the choices directly in front of us. So, before becoming consumed with what may happen six months from now, think about whether there is something God has already shown you to do today.
There may be a conversation you need to have, a responsibility you need to handle, something you need to pray about further, or just more time you need to spend waiting before making a decision.
I Still Don't Know What to Do
You might read these five passages, pray, and still not get an immediate answer. Keep seeking God instead of making a decision just because you’re tired of waiting.
Ask Him for wisdom, stay in His Word, pay attention to whether your choices agree with what He has already said, and be willing to give the situation time when time is available.
We won't always know everything we want to know before moving forward, but we can keep our hearts turned toward God while we wait for His direction. He sees what we can't see, and His Word gives us wisdom for walking faithfully even when the next step is not yet clear.
