“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

Micah 6:8

Things that happen in our lives that don't always feel fair. You can’t scroll your timeline or turn on the news without seeing something that grieves your spirit or tempts you to live outside of God's will. I often find myself wondering "how do I walk justly in a world that’s anything but?"

In Micah 6:8 God spoke through Micah to confront His people about empty religion, performance-based faith, and fake righteousness. He wasn't impressed with sacrifices if they didn't live right. What God really wanted was justice, mercy, humility.

There's enough pain, injustice, pridefulness, and cruelty all around us. Sometimes it feels like we have to fight just to keep our peace or protect our values. Yet, in the middle of it all, God has already told us what He wants from us as believers. He doesn’t leave us confused or uncertain; and Micah 6:8 lays it out simply: do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him.

You don't have to live in a way where you're performing for others. This life assignment in Micah 6 is about living in a way that pleases God, especially when the world around us is doing the opposite. To do this, I want to share what parts of this verse mean for our lives today.

“Do Justly”

To “do justly” means to live with fairness, honesty, and integrity in how you treat people. It means doing what’s right, even when it’s uncomfortable or unpopular. It's not just about big social justice issues (though those matter, too). It starts in the everyday places of your life:

  • Being truthful, even when it costs you something

  • Refusing to mistreat people just because others do

  • Treating coworkers, family, and strangers with respect

  • Owning your mistakes and making things right

Justice matters to God. And if it matters to Him, it has to matter to us—not only in what we say, but in how we live.

“Love Mercy”

Mercy is choosing kindness when you could choose payback. It is giving grace even when someone doesn’t deserve it.

Loving mercy means being the kind of person who’s willing to forgive, extend patience, and see others the way God saw you—flawed, but still worth saving.

This doesn’t mean you ignore wrong. Instead, you lead with compassion, not harshness. You remember that you’ve needed mercy, too and probably will again.

“Walk Humbly with God”

Walking humbly with God means you stay close to Him, knowing you don’t have all the knowledge or answers about life. You don’t try to impress God—you simply stay surrendered to Him.

Humility looks like letting the Lord shape your opinions, guide your steps, and check your heart when pride starts to rise. You choose obedience over self-promotion. You admit when you need help. And most importantly, you remember that everything you are, and everything you have, comes from Him.

Why This Matters in Life

God didn’t give this command in a peaceful, perfect time. The people of Micah’s day were living through injustice, corruption, and spiritual decline. But God didn’t tell them to just survive it, He told them how to live in it.

And He’s telling us the same today.

You don’t have to match the world’s behavior just because the world is loud or out of control. You’re called to walk differently. To live set apart. To do what’s right. To love like Jesus. To stay humble before God. That is how light shines in darkness.

Micah 6:8 is an encouraging verse, and it's also a clear requirement. It's not just for church leaders; it's for every Christian who wants to please God and live faithfully in the middle of a broken world.

Ask yourself, today:

  • Am I doing what’s right, even when no one is watching?

  • Am I showing mercy the way I want to receive it?

  • Am I walking humbly with God—or trying to lead on my own?

I pray that today's truth will help you see that God is still calling you to live set apart. And He gives us the grace to do it—each decision, every moment, and with each step, daily.
