Does God Hear Me When I Pray?

If you've been worrying about whether God hears your prayers, rest assured that He does. But the Bible also lets us know that the quality of our relationship with Him makes the difference.

God hears the righteous, those who seek Him, and those who pray according to His will. But if we allow sin, rebellion, and refusing to listen to God control our lives, that can affect our prayer life.

So, the biblical answer is not simply, “God hears everybody in exactly the same way.” God knows all things, but the Bible shows that there's a distinction between God being aware of a prayer and God receiving or responding favorably to it.

Read This Scripture

“The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.”

— Psalm 34:15

Who does the Bible say God hears?

God hears those who fear Him, seek Him, obey Him, and call on Him sincerely. John 9:31 says:

“Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.”

1John 5:14 also shows us that we can have confidence in prayer when we ask according to God's will.

Prayer isn't a way to make God agree with us. It's part of a relationship in which we're learning how to trust Him, and how to obey Him and bring our requests under His will.

Are there prayers God doesn't hear?

Yes, and the Bible gives several warnings, like the ones found in these passages:

“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”

— Psalm 66:18

“He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.”

— Proverbs 28:9

A person can't knowingly resist God, hold on to sin without repentance, and still assume prayer is unaffected.

That doesn't mean a person has to be perfect before praying. But God looks at the heart, and repentance means something.

What about someone who isn't yet saved?

The Bible also shows people calling on God before they fully understood Him.

Cornelius is one example. If you read in Acts 10, his prayers came up before God, and God sent Peter to preach the gospel to him. So, God still hears the prayer of the person who really desires to seek Him, even if they're still learning how to follow Him.

We should never assume that God ignores every prayer from an unbeliever because His Word tells us that He can respond to someone who is genuinely seeking Him.

At the same time, the Bible consistently points people toward repentance, faith, and reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ.

What if I've sinned?

If there is sin in your life, don't avoid prayer. You can confess it, repent, and ask God to cleanse you and help you walk rightly before Him.

Read what First John 1:9 says:

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Prayer isn't only for people who have everything right. It's also where we come when we need mercy, forgiveness, correction, and help from the Lord.

What should I remember when I pray?

When you pray, keep your heart open to God. Be willing to obey what He shows you. Ask according to His will and trust Him with the answer.

Also Read These Scriptures:

  1. Psalm 34:15–17 God watches over the righteous and hears them when they cry out to Him.

  2. Psalm 66:18–20 Sin can hinder prayer, but the psalmist praises God for hearing his prayer.

  3. Proverbs 15:29 God is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayers of the righteous.

  4. John 9:31 The healed man declares that God hears those who worship Him and do His will.

  5. Acts 10:1–41 Cornelius sought God faithfully, and God responded to his prayers by sending Peter to share the gospel.

  6. John 5:14–15 Jesus warned the healed man to turn away from sin after receiving healing.

God knows every prayer that's spoken, but He especially hears and responds to those who seek Him with a sincere heart, walk in obedience, and come to Him in faith. If sin has come between you and God, the answer is not to stop praying. The answer is to repent and draw near to Him.
