20 Bible Verses to Read About the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit isn’t just found in one section of the Bible or tied to a single spiritual moment. From creation all the way to the early church, the scriptures show the Holy Spirit actively working, guiding, empowering, teaching, convicting, and supporting God’s people.
You and I need to know more than the fact that the Holy Spirit exists. We need to understand who He is, what He does, how He works in our lives, and what it means to walk in the Spirit.
Here are my favorite Bible passages worth knowing that talk about the Holy Spirit.
Genesis 1:2
“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
The Holy Spirit didn’t first appear in the New Testament. He was present at creation and has always been active in carrying out the work of God.

Acts 5:3–4
“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost...thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”
The Holy Spirit is not just a force, feeling, or influence. The Holy Spirit is God and deserves to be honored as such.

Luke 3:22
“And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”
At His baptism, the Holy Ghost came down upon Jesus, marking the start of His public ministry and revealing God’s presence and approval.

Luke 4:1
“And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.”
Being led by the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean you will never face hardship or testing. It means God remains with you and gives you what you need to remain faithful through it.

John 14:16
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.”
Jesus promised that the Comforter would come and stay with His people. Living the Christian life isn’t something you’re expected to do without the help and presence of the Holy Spirit.

John 14:17
“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
Jesus told His disciples that the Spirit of truth would dwell within them. The Holy Spirit works in you, helping you grow, obey God, and become more like Christ.

John 14:26
“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things.”
The Holy Spirit teaches you and helps you understand the words of Jesus. As you read the Bible, ask Him to give you understanding and help you apply what you learn.

John 14:26
“And bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
The Holy Spirit can remind you of God’s Word when you need wisdom, courage, guidance, or comfort. That’s why it’s so important to keep reading and learning the Bible.

John 15:26
“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth...he shall testify of me.”
The Holy Spirit’s work always directs you to Jesus, revealing the truth about Him and helping believers share their testimony of Christ.

John 16:8
“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”
The Holy Spirit brings conviction so that you can recognize sin, repent, and return to God. His conviction leads you toward truth and forgiveness rather than leaving you without hope.

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth.”
The Holy Spirit guides you into truth and will never lead you against the Word of God. When you believe you’re being led, compare that direction carefully with what the Bible says.

John 16:14
“He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
The Holy Spirit lifts up Jesus, and spiritual teaching, worship, ministry, and personal experiences should help you see Him more clearly and honor Him more deeply.

Acts 1:8
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me.”
The Holy Ghost gives you the strength to share your faith in Jesus. This power helps you speak with boldness, live with integrity, and spread the gospel to others.

Acts 2:4
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
On the Day of Pentecost, the believers were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages as the Spirit enabled them. This fulfilled Jesus’ promise that His followers would receive power from above.

Romans 8:26
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought.”
Sometimes you may not know what to pray or how to express the burdens you carry. In those moments, the Holy Spirit steps in to help in your weakness and intercedes in line with God’s will.

1 Corinthians 3:16
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”
Your life belongs to God, and the Spirit of God dwells within you. Your choices, habits, relationships, and conduct matter because you are His temple.

Galatians 5:22–23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance.”
The Holy Spirit produces godly character in your life. Spiritual growth can be seen in how you love, respond, endure, speak, and treat other people.

Galatians 5:25
“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
Walking in the Spirit should affect your everyday life. His leading should shape how you handle temptation, conflict, correction, decisions, and relationships.

The Holy Spirit guides you in understanding spiritual truths. Come to the Bible with prayer, humility, and an open heart, ready to follow what God reveals.

Not everything labeled as spiritual is from God. Always compare teachings, impressions, prophecies, and experiences with Scripture and the truth about Jesus Christ.

How Can I Study about the Holy Spirit?
If you're wanting to learn more about the Holy Spirit, I encourage you to begin with John 14–16 and read what Jesus taught His disciples about the Comforter. Then read Acts 1–2 to see the promise of the Holy Ghost fulfilled in the early church.
From there, study Romans 8 to understand how the Spirit works in our daily lives as believers. Galatians 5 will help you learn what it means to walk in the Spirit, and 1 Corinthians 12 will introduce the gifts of the Spirit.
The more you study, continue to ask God to help you understand His Word, recognize the Spirit’s work, and live in greater obedience to what He says. The Holy Spirit wasn’t given only to make us feel something in a church service. He was given to fill us, lead and teach us, and even strengthen, convict, empower, and help us live as faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ.
