Why does the Bible tells us to stir up the gift? Because faith can settle if we’re not careful with our walk with the Lord. In my journey, I have learned that spiritual fire doesn’t stay lit on yesterday’s spark. Our souls need fresh surrender, fresh pursuit, and fresh hunger everyday. Paul told Timothy to “stir up the gift of God” because even the strongest believers can hit a point in life when their fire starts to flicker.
Have you been a bit inconsistent in your devotion? You've been present to Sunday church community, but it feels routine. You've been praying and trying to hold your family together but you’re growing tired of serving others and it’s wearing down in your joy. Remember, the same God who first set your heart ablaze hasn’t gone anywhere. He’s still right here and He’s able to breathe fresh life into what’s grown dim in your heart.
I put together these verses with you in mind. They're Scriptures that I believe will reach deep into your spirit and do what only God’s Word can do—restore your strength and reignite your fire for Him:
Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee.
-2 Timothy 1:6
His word is in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.
-Jeremiah 20:9
Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.
-Romans 12:11
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
-Psalm 51:10
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
-Isaiah 40:31
Sometimes what dimmed your fire wasn’t sin. It was that you remained silent towards God. You stopped responding to Him. You got tired of devoting yourself to Him, tired of making Him a priority instead of an option. And the enemy convinced you to settle for this type of spiritual living.
But the Spirit is still present and it's time that you, “stir it up.” Fire doesn’t fall where there’s no sacrifice. You must go back to your secret place. Turn off the noise of distractions and bring your weariness to God like oil. He can breathe on it again, and as He does, watch revival happen again in your soul. It starts in your willingness to surrender, not to pretend or go through the motions in your faith walk.

When we've been walking with God for a while, we learn that passion can fade when we lose focus on our eternal purpose. You can’t keep the spiritual fire burning if you stop tending the flame. You must stay close to what keeps your heart burning, like prayer (even when you don't know what to say), repentance (even when it feels like it's breaking and revealing your inner emotions), and worship which always has a unique way of changing the atmosphere.
Give your best even when it seems God isn’t moving in your life. Your spirit man should remind you that He’s always at work!
It's your consistency that will build your spiritual strength and take you deeper in your walk with the Lord.
The way to tear that fire that’s been low? Fan it, feed it, and guard it. I have experienced first-hand how God can reignite what’s been smoldering in our spirits. Don’t wait for another service or song. Meet Him right where you are in your life and get your fire back.
My Takeaways for You
The Scriptures I shared above aren’t just verses to read. They're verses to study. I am always encouraging women to open their Bibles, slow down a bit, and let the Word give you direction. Think about this today:
What does it mean to stir up the gift of God in your life? How can you begin doing that right now?
Why did Jeremiah describe God’s Word as a “burning fire” in his heart? What does that tell you about how deeply God’s Word should affect you?
What does being fervent in spirit look like in your daily walk? What areas of your life need to be reignited?
What kind of strength does God promise to those who wait on Him, and how does that strengthen your endurance in this season?
Blessings,

Jessica
