What Does Agapē Mean?
Agapē means divine, selfless love. It’s the kind of love that originates from God Himself. It isn’t based on feelings, attraction, or circumstance. It’s the highest form of love. A love that gives without expecting anything in return.
Agapē love is not reactive, it’s:
Intentional in every way,
The love that moved God to send His Son for us,
The love that forgives us, restores us, and keeps on calling us.
We can’t manufacture this kind of love on our own. It flows from the Spirit of God living inside of us. When the Bible says, “God is love,” the word used there is Agapē. It’s patient when it’s tested, kind when it’s tired, and it’s steady no matter what comes our way.
As women, we often love through emotion. We love those who love us back, or we pull away when we’ve been hurt. But Agapē stretches us. It’s love on God’s terms, not ours. It teaches us to forgive deeply, to pray for those who wrong us, and to serve even when no one notices. When we learn to love this way, we begin to reflect Christ’s heart — the kind of love that changes our homes, heals our relationships, and reveals God those who desperately need Him.
Here are two verses where agape is mentioned. Take time to read them. Afterwards think about how these verses have changed your perspective:
“And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:13
“By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another.”
— John 13:35
